The World Mission Team seeks to help the world community on our doorstep within Edinburgh and to work with partners across the world in giving Christian service to people in need. Such partnerships include contacts made through members of our congregation over the years. We also support certain international Christian charities which seek to meet major global relief needs and broadcast the message of Jesus and those which support Christians holding on to their faith in difficult circumstances.
Partnerships

Rutune Village in Kenya
At Liberton Kirk, we have the active involvement of Nelson and Fidelis Muturi, who normally re-turn each year to their home village, Rutune, North of Nairobi in rural Kenya. Community life in Rutune can be quite fragile since food crops are affected by weather and impact of climate change (and by elephants!). LK has been able to help all ages at Rutune village with mosquito nets, medicine for the local pharmacy and food parcels, and they assure us of their prayers for LK and Scotland.

Waldensians and the Mediterranean Hope Project in Italy
The Waldensian Church in Italy is a long-standing partner through David Lamb and the Scottish Waldensian Society, and visits have been made. Pastors also visit Edinburgh from time to time. We support a project (Mediterranean Hope) run for the last 10 years helping migrant workers from Africa and the Middle East, and we have a link with Fiona Kendall, a Scottish Lawyer working in the Rome Office.

Comfort International in Rwanda etc.
We are also supporting Comfort International, a Scottish charity working in six African countries. They are involved in street children rescue, supporting vulnerable mothers and their babies, rehabilitating ex-child soldiers and provision of church leadership training. This connection is through Robert and Liz Snedden who have seen at first hand the charity’s work in Rwanda.
Support for people from Overseas in Edinburgh
Being close to the University of Edinburgh there are many overseas students, some with families here. In conjunction with Friends International, we are helping with others at the Conversation Corner at Liberton Northfield which runs in term-time and provides friendship and help with language and cultural background.
Support for persecuted Christians

We are keen to support Christians, particularly in the Middle East, who struggle to follow their faith in difficult circumstances. We support the work of SAT-7, broadcasting Christian programmes in the Middle East and North Africa.
Support for Charities working around the world
1.
Christian Aid — in Christian Aid Week each May we co-ordinate a collection in the parish and a fund- raising “Big Brekkie”. We also publicise campaigns for justice and peace and encourage support.

2.
Scottish Bible Society — we support and publicise the work of the Bible Society, seeking to take God’s word to all in their own language so that they can read it for themselves.

3.
Self Help Africa — at Harvest Thanksgiving, as well as helping the needy in our city, we encourage donations to Self Help Africa, a charity working in several African countries encouraging self-sufficiency.

4.
The Leprosy Mission — we support the work of this charity, which seeks to eliminate leprosy and its stigma whilst providing health care and life support.

5.
Eco Matters/Fair Trade — we support our church’s Eco Group in their efforts, since the world’s poor are the most vulnerable to climate change. We host a Just Gifts stall (cards/gifts) at Christmas each year.
