Daily Devotions for OCTOBER 2020

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken,
let us be thankful and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.

Hebrews 12 verse 28

During 2020 we are looking at standing on the promises of God – as well as dipping into Psalm 119 some weekends – pausing in prayer at our times of Midday Devotion for others in our church family, our city and our world at this time of the year.

In October we are considering Bible words on the KINGDOM OF GOD.

We are all encouraged to listen for God’s voice and make our response as we journey together in our ‘rhythm of devotion’ during this year with a difference of 2020.

These Devotions are but one way to feed on God’s Word in the morning, at midday, in the evening… to pray with Him continually through the day and even to share with others the treasures or hurdles you discover.
The Church website and Facebook page (even on a handy mobile) provide a fuller daily devotional page. However it all follows the pattern below which the information provided fits into, based on the Kirk’s origins of the Celtic and Northumbrian traditions which we started as a church family in 2015.

Morning

Reflection and Prayer at the end of the day

A Prayer for the Month of October

O Great King of kings
Your kingdom come
We say
Your will be done
In our lives
In your Church
In this world
As it is in heaven
For yours is the eternal kingdom
All the power and heavenly glory
Now and forever
Amen
!

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven
Hallowed be Your Name.
Your kingdom come
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our sins
As we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory.
Now and for ever
Amen

Upper Room day and Evening Gathering for Prayer

Morning
Look Upward and Pray to hear and receive from Jesus, Saviour and Lord

Reading : JUDGES 16 verses 4-22

Meditation : take time and consider this passage this morning.
Samson and Delilah.
What words or images stay with you?
What are you encouraged and challenged by today?
Is there someone unhelpful in your life at this time?

Pray in response to what you have read
Taking time to pause and listen for God’s answer to you
And then pray….

O Lord
Speak to us
Speak to me
By name
And help me hear
What the Spirit is saying in these days
To me
To my family
To my Church
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Midday
Take time to listen for God to speak with you at this time of day
Ask, seek, knock….hear!
Father God…thank you.

Evening
Reading : read the passage again from JUDGES 16
Reflect on the words…. and then Pray….to the LORD our God

God of Samson, our God,
We bring our evening worship to you
As we lay ourselves and our families before you
As we acknowledge what you are saying to us at this time
Forgive us our sins
As we forgive those who have sinned against us
In Jesus’ name.
Amen and Amen.

Tuesday Time-Out and evening Gathering

As a Church we set aside a Tuesday each week and provide a place with space – the UPPER ROOM – a place for time-out. However in these recent weeks and months sadly it was not possible to open and run this space….BUT IT IS THIS TUESDAY!!

You are invited to….

* A place with space
** For time-out
* Private prayer
** With God

Above the Kirkgate Cafe…..7.30am-7.30pm

Opportunites to pray with others will be possible at 8am…12 noon and 7pm

There are guidelines to follow…..including wearing a face covering.

But…..our Tuesdays – and every day – can still be an opportunity for time out…..with God…..where we are at home or work

You are invited to pause regularly at some time during SEPTEMBER and OCTOBER and be still with God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

You are encouraged to speak with Him….to listen to Him.…to receive from Him…especially at this time as we seek to hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church in our times.

The PATHWAY of PEACE around the Kirkyard is now closed but you can still walk around the Kirk and as you walk and think and reflect and pray in these days know that God is still walking with you. You will find that there are prompts to consider from the Bible as you prayerfully walk – the online church magazine has more information.

You are invited to share in the Midday Prayers and Evening Prayers that will be posted online at 12noon and 9pm on various days on the Kirk website and on our social media pages. We are also encouraged to pray with others in our city and across our land at 5pm….focussing on all those affected by the coronavirus…..and during this particular week you are invited to join with others and pray for all those affected afresh by the new coronavirus restrictions.

You are invited to pray with others in our Church family as we journey through 2020 together…..and to listen for what God is saying to us in these particular days.
You are therefore invited to the Church monthly Gathering for Prayer via Zoom…..Tuesday evening at 7.30pm. This month our time together will include a time of focussing on the NHS and local care homes in our community.

Daily Devotions for Sunday 27th September, 2020

Morning
Look Upward and Pray to hear and receive from the Living God

Reading : PSALM 101 verse 101

Meditation : take time and consider this one verse this particular Sunday morning.
What does it mean for you today?
What is God teaching you from His written Word?

And then pray in response

O God of greatness and of true goodness
We bow before you
We believe in you
We trust in you
We seek to live for your glory
Even today.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
.

Midday
Pray the Prayer for the Month as your own Midday Prayer

In Joshua we see Israel in the wilderness and the lesson that fullness of your will in us is through Jesus and not the law.
Lord, just as your people Israel experienced swollen rivers and walled cities, so do we today with viruses and sickness, people lost in darkness, man’s inhumanity to man, poverty and hardship close to home. Equip us in your strength to overcome. Bring us into your fullness; deliverance, healing and abundant living; and plant in us the fruit of your Spirit. Help us face the future with courage and keep us fixed on your Word.
Lord, your people had to wait faithfully and patiently to enter the promised land; they suffered loss when Moses, their leader, was taken from them but you met them in their loss and provided for them a new leader to take them through.
When we become impatient in waiting for you to act we need to remember that you operate on a whole different level to our understanding. Please help us to trust and feel your presence with us as we wait on you.
Thank you for your promise that you will never leave us alone.
Amen

Evening
Reading : read this particular verse again from PSALM 119
Reflect on the words and images and then Pray in response to this God

O LORD, hear our evening prayers we ask
As we thank you for the blessings of this Sunday
As we believe and trust in you
As we pilgrimage on towards tomorrow
Thy Kingdom come
Thy will be done
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thy Kingdom Come #offer

As a Church we took part in the global prayer venture of Thy Kingdom Come earlier this year.
This ran during the 11 days between Ascension and Pentecost….many weeks and months ago!

Each Saturday at 12 noon we are continuing to ask and seek and knock on Heaven’s door…..’Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done’…..and to pray for up to 5 people we know to meet with Jesus and to experience God’s Kingdom reign in their lives.

This week we focus on the theme of OFFER as we pause to pray with others.

We are invited to spend time with the LORD our Father God….offering to Him all that we are and all that we have….for His Kingdom purposes

Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise,

Take my hands, and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love;
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee,

Take my voice, and let me sing
Always, only, for my King;
Take my lips, and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee,

Take my silver and my gold;
Not a mite would I withhold;
Take my intellect, and use
Every power as Thou shalt choose,

Take my will, and make it Thine;
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart; it is Thine own;
It shall be Thy royal throne,

Take my love; my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure-store.
Take myself, and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.

(words by Frances Ridley Havergal 1836-1879)
